Green Heron Process

I was asked to create a painting of a Green Heron as a desktop image for a bird enthusiast. I started by looking up reference and trying to get a feel for the shape and color of the bird. I also had to work out how to paint the feathers and how they interacted with light. I did quite a few pencil sketches to start with, then I did three studies to get a grasp of the color and method of painting I wanted to use. Here the final image and the three studies!
